Men’s Lacrosse Upset by Catholic in Semifinal

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team ended its season Wednesday when No. 3 seed Catholic upset the No. 2 Crusaders 8-6in the Landmark Conference semifinal.

Four different players scored SU's six goals with Greg Rabiecki picking up two on four shots. Nick Reardon and Corrie Van Haasteren added an assist each with Van Haasteren adding five ground balls.

Jake Purnell won 10-of-17 face-offs and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Goalie Dylan Abplanalp (12-5) ended his Rookie of the Year season with nine saves in 60 minutes of work.

The Cardinals (10-6) scored first just over a minute into the game and followed two minutes later with another goal for a 2-0 lead.

Susquehanna (12-5) answered with a Rabiecki goal at the 9:34 mark to cut the lead in half (2-1). Louis Pillari followed with a goal with 3:25 remaining in the first quarter to tie the game at two.  The Crusaders took a 3-2 lead with 41 seconds remaining in the first but the Cardinals answered with a goal with four seconds on the clock to go into the second quarter tied at three.

In the second quarter, Catholic out-scored SU 3-2 to go into halftime leading by one (6-5). Chet McLaughlin scored the Crusaders' first goal of the second quarter with 5:18 on the clock while Jake Calder scored the second with 14 seconds remaining in the half.

Both defenses only allowed one goal apiece in the third quarter.  Alec Tzaneteas scored for the Crusaders with 28 seconds remaining in the quarter. Unfortunately, this was the last goal for Susquehanna and Catholic scored the lone fourth-quarter goal to win 8-6.
