TOWSON, Md. – Freshmen Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J. / Holy Cross) and Joe DeLuca (Freehold, N.J. / St. John Vianney ) each scored two goals as the Crusaders erased an early 1-0 deficit and defeated Goucher 5-1 to improve to .500 in Landmark Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
Elijah Lais scored off a pass from Lashaw Salta at 20:23 in the first half to give the Gophers the lead 1-0.
SU (6-6-1, 2-2) outshot Goucher (5-8-1, 2-3) in the first half 6-3 and held the edge in corners, 4-3.
The Crusaders came out firing in the second half, as sophomore Dean Hristopoulos (West Chester, Pa. / Unionville) found DeLuca for a header which beat Gopher goalkeeper Steve Baum for the equalizer only 1:45 into the period.
Nearly ten minutes later, DeLuca found the back of the net again, this time on an unassisted goal to give the Crusaders the lead 2-1 at 56:55.
Semmel notched his first goal of the afternoon at 79:34, receiving assists from junior back Sean Raffetto (Manasquan, N.J. / Wall) and sophomore midfielder John Boylan (Hazlet, N.J. / St. John Vianney).
Almost two minutes later, Semmel picked up his second goal with help from sophomore midfielder Andrew Murphy (Natick, Mass. / Natick).
Freshman forward David Trank (Mendham, N.J. / West Morris Mendham) rounded out the scoring barrage for the Crusaders, scoring at 84:56.
The Crusaders outshot Goucher 22-3 in the second half and held the edge in corners 5-3.
Junior goalkeeper Pat Horan (Sutton, Mass. / Worcester Academy) recorded three saves for SU, who played in his first game since Sept. 6 due to injury.
The Crusaders continue Landmark Conference play as they host Juniata on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 5:00 p.m.
