Men’s Soccer Upsets Nationally-Ranked William Paterson
YORK, Pa. – A Zach Ziegler (Harrisburg, Pa./Strath Haven) penalty kick goal proved to be the difference in the Susquehanna men's soccer team's 1-0 win over No. 22 William Paterson on the opening day at the York College Tournament.
Ziegler scored with just under five minutes remaining in the first half and that penalty kick goal proved to be the game winner.
With the victory, SU remains undefeated on the season (4-0) while dealing William Paterson (1-2) its second loss of the fall.
The Crusaders will now face No. 2 York in the Sunday's championship game, set to start at 3:30 p.m.
Susquehanna was out-shot by the Pioneers 13-9 but only three of William Paterson's shots were on goal and SU goalie Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) came up with stops on all three shots.
John Boylan (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney) was the only SU player with multiple shots as he finished with two.
Ziegler's goal proved critical as the Crusaders were held to only one shot in the second half. The Susquehanna defense, however, limited William Paterson to only four shots of its own in that half.
The Pioneers' team received a red card in the 42nd minute and each team was also issued two yellow cards during the course of play.
