Men’s Soccer Edges Kean in Overtime

MADISON, N.J. – A Joe DeLuca (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) overtime goal propelled the Susquehanna men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory against Kean on the opening day of the Drew Fall Invitational.

The Crusaders (1-0) are slated to play SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at 3 p.m. on the final day of the invitational.

DeLuca netted the game winner off an assist from David Trank (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) just three minutes into the overtime period to break the scoreless tie.

SU held an 18-14 edge in shots, including a 10-7 advantage in the second half, but put only six of those shots on goal. Kean (0-1), meanwhile, had seven shots on goal but was held without a shot in the overtime period. Trank accounted for a game-high five shots while DeLuca connected on his lone shot of the afternoon.

Goalie Zach Zoller (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) played all 93:01 minutes of the game and racked up seven saves.

The Crusaders had two corner kicks within a 10-second span in the 40th minute but neither were converted into goals and a shot by Kean's Alex Noriega at the 41:24 mark sailed high to keep it knotted at zero at the midway point of the game.

SU was held without a shot for the final eight-plus minutes of the second half and nothing came of a Cougars corner kick in the 87th minute to eventually send the game into overtime.

It took DeLuca just 3:01 into overtime to end the game as he took a Trank base line cross and headed it past Kean keeper Brad Watkins for the game winner.
