DALLAS, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's soccer team handed Misericordia its first loss of the season, defeating the Cougars 3-0 on the road.
Pedro Souza [Sao Paulo, Brazil/Gunnery School (Conn.)] struck twice for SU (3-2-1) while Joe DeLuca (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) accounted for the third Crusader goal.
Misericordia (3-1-1) had 11 shots to Susquehanna's six but the Crusaders put all six on goal and turned half of those shots into scores. Souza recorded a team-best three shots and goalie Augusto Lima (Campinas, Brazil/Mercersburg Academy) finished with two saves in 90 minutes of work.
The Cougars narrowly out-shot SU 4-3 in the opening period. However, just past the midway mark of the first half, DeLuca broke the scoreless tie off an assist from Brennan Colby (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) to put his squad ahead 1-0.
Misericordia had a shot and a corner kick over the final seven minutes of the half but none found the back of the net and Susquehanna preserved its 1-0 lead at halftime.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Souza scored his first goal of the evening, teaming up with David Trank (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham), who got credit for the assist. It remained 2-0 Crusaders until six minutes remaining in the game when Souza tacked on an insurance goal for a 3-0 Susquehanna advantage.
SU held Misericordia without a shot for the final 10 minutes as the Crusaders went on to pick up their fourth shutout of the fall.
Susquehanna is back in action on Sept. 13 with a 2 p.m. road game at York (Pa.).
