2-0 Defeat in Conference Opener for Men’s Soccer

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's soccer team faced a setback in its Landmark Conference title defense on Saturday, losing to visiting Merchant Marine by a score of 2-0.

The Crusaders (3-4-2) were on the attack early, earning three corner kicks in the first nine minutes, but were unable to translate these opportunities into goals. Over the course of the game, SU held a 13-3 advantage in corners.

The Mariners struck in the 20th minute as Connor Culliver tapped in a pass from Kyle Arestivo after a USMMA cross ricocheted off the post. The visitors doubled their total shortly after when a Susquehanna defender redirected a threatening pass into net for an own goal at 22:07.

SU finished the period with two shots on goal, both from freshman Tyler McKenna (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and on the other end, keeper Augusto Lima (Campinas, Brazil/Mercersburg Academy) had four saves for the game.

Despite the deficit, the Crusaders came out determined in the second half and nearly cut the lead to 2-1 in the 63rd minute when a shot from Paul Siekmann (Washington Crossing, Pa./Council Rock North) bounced off the crossbar.

Another chance came late in the game when Garian Lashley (Aurora, Ontario/Bill Crothers Secondary) free kick deep in USMMA territory sailed just wide of the net in the 84th minute. In the waning minutes, Pedro Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Gunnery School (Conn.) registered two shots, one on goal, but was denied by keeper Cory Maier, who had four saves in the shutout.

The team will stay at home for a nonconference tilt against Wilkes on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
