SELINSGROVE, Pa. – It was a difficult Wednesday evening for the Susquehanna men's soccer team as the homestanding Crusaders fell 4-1 to Landmark Conference opponent Elizabethtown. SU (4-7-2, 0-4-0) is still looking for its first win in conference play while Elizabethtown improves to 3-1 in the Landmark.
Ryan Somerville finished with two goals for the Blue Jays, both assisted by Jamison MacMain. Brent Batory also added a goal and assist for the visitors.
The earliest chance for either team came in the 8th minute when a shot from Joe DeLuca (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) hit the inside of the far post, but was cleared to safety by the Blue Jays. The team traded shots and saves with SU's Zach Zoller (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) stopping consecutive headers in the 14th minute and another shot in the 31st.
Shortly after, however, the visitors broke through at 31:23 with a goal from Batory, who beat Zoller high and to the right.
The Blue Jays jumped to a 2-0 lead shortly after the break when MacMain and Somerville connected for the first of two goals. The two-goal deficit was cut in half in the 73rd minute when Nick Talabiska (Lewisburg, Pa.) found the back of the net after a deflection in front by Matt Roberts (Barrington, R.I./Barrington).
Although it seemed as if the Crusaders were back in the game, their chances took a hit barely two minutes later when Batory dribbled out wide and found Dylan Sisler with a ball across the face of net.
The game was put of reach for good in the 83rd when MacMain and Somervillle connected again.
DeLuca and Nick Fecci (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) both finished with four shots and SU held a 16-11 margin in that category. The physical contest featured 26 fouls, five yellow cards, and one red card.
Susquehanna will take a break from Landmark play with a non-conference home game against Alvernia on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m.
