Men’s Soccer Falls Late to Salisbury

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Susquehanna men's soccer team was tied 1-1 with Salisbury with roughly 15 minutes to play before the Seagulls scored in the 76th minute with what stood as the game-winning goal. The game was played at a neutral site in Owings Mills, Md.

It took SU's Sean Leister (Navesink, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) just 6:38 to score the Crusaders' first goal of the season and put his team ahead 1-0. Unfortunately, late in the first half Salisbury netted the equalizer before picking up the go-ahead score late in the second period.

Susquehanna (0-1) doubled up Salisbury (1-0) in shots, 12-6, with 11 different players picking up at least one shot. Goalie Augusto Lima (Campinas, Brazil/Mercersburg Academy) notched three saves in his 90 minutes of work. SU also had five corner kicks to the Seagulls' three.

Leister's goal less than seven minutes into the game came off a free kick from 30 yards out. It remained 1-0 in favor of the Crusaders until less than four minutes remained in the half when Salisbury's Nathan Mattola scored on a sliding shot off the left post to make it 1-1. SU's Elias George (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) had a shot saved in the 44th minute and thus it remained 1-1 at the half.

Susquehanna fired off four shots in the first 12 minutes of the second period but none found the back of the net. A header by Sam Tana (Baldwin, Md./St. Paul's) at the 71:40 mark went high and roughly four minutes later, Salisbury's Brooks Zentgraf came through with a goal down the right side that beat Lima and put the Seagulls in the lead, 2-1.

With just 10 seconds remaining, Garian Lashley (Aurora, Ontario/Bill Crothers Secondary) got a shot off but it was blocked to end the game 2-1 in favor of Salisbury.

SU returns to action on Sept. 4 with a 4 p.m. game at Elmira.
