Junior Thomas Burke converted a perfect direct kick over the goalie's hands for the only goal of the game at the Susquehanna University Men's Soccer team won a 1-0 decision over Scranton University Saturday afternoon on Fitzpatrick Field in Scranton.
Susquehanna (4-6-2 overall, 2-1-1 Landmark) moved all the way up to a tie for second place in the Landmark Conference standings with the victory while Scranton (7-5-0, 1-3-0) lost its second straight conference game and fell to seventh in the standings.
After a scoreless first half, Scranton was whistled for a foul and a yellow card offense in the first five minutes of the periuod and Burke took the resulting free kick and found a hole over the Scranton wall of defenders and past the outstretched hands of the keeper for the goal.
The game was close for the entire 90 minutes as the teams each registered nine shots and Scranton held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
Matt Ellingworth made three saves to record the shutout victory for the River Hawks.
Susquehanna will face Gettysburg in a non-conference game Tuesday night and return to Landmark play home against Drew next Saturday.
