David Grove was part of three winning relays for the Susquehanna University Men's Swimming and Diving team Friday night in the season-opening Fourth Annual Schweikert Relays in the Garrett Center Natatorium in Selinsgrove.
Grove helped the River Hawks to wins in the opening 200 Medley relay as he teamed with Shane Sullivan, Brett Walker and James Orzolek for the first place finish. He added a second win in the 3x100 Backstroke Relay as he swam with Orzolek and Owen Madden for the win and then capped his first-place finishes with a win in the 500 Free Relay. He was in the winning relay with Madden, Walker and Owen Kelly in the 500.
"I thought it was a good start to the year with some positive results," said Head Coach Jerry Foley. "I felt we were stronger on the first and second swims and looked like we tired a bit later in the night. It's still early in the season and that part will come. Overall, I am happy with the results."
Walker, Orzolek and Madden all finished with two wins each while Kelly had a first and second place finish to his credit for the night.
The most exciting finish came in the 500 Freestyle Crescendo race. Grove started with a strong opening 50-yard leg and Madden was next with a 100-yard leg. Kelly swam the 150-yard third leg and Walker capped the race with a strong 200-yard leg as he overcame a two-body length deficit with win a tight finish. The River Hawks out-touched Kings at the wall winning by 0.24 seconds.
The River Hawks will compete next at a tri-meet with Marywood and Drew on November 4 at Marywood.
