Men Earn Four Top-3 Finishes on Day One

James Orzolek and David Grove helped two relays to top-3 finishes and Grove added a school record in the 100-yard backstroke in the opening leg of the medley relay to pace the Susquehanna University Men's Swimming and Diving team on the first day of competition at the Landmark Conference Championship Friday in Germantown, Maryland.

Orzolek started the evening session with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay as he teamed with David Grove, Anthony Principe and Brett Walker to second with a 1:25.71. Later, he sped to a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle race with a time of 21.15 while Grove tied for fourth in the race with a 21.48.

In the final race of the night, Grove's record-breaking opening leg (51.75) gave Susquehanna an early lead and helped the 400-yard Medley Relay take third as he raced with Orzolek, Principe and Shane Sullivan to finish with a time of 3:29.02.

Earlier in the night, Owen Madden finished third in the 500-yard freestyle race in 4:48.24 and teammate Luke Henry was fifth with a time of 4:51.08 as he out raced the sixth-place finisher by .19 seconds.

Walker also scored points for the River Hawks with a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:58.77.

After one day, Catholic University leads the team standings with 294.50 points. Scranton is second (171) and Susquehanna is in a close third (170.5) just a half point back. Drew, Marywood, Elizabethtown and Goucher round out the team standings.

Competition continues Saturday and Sunday at the championships.
