David Grove broke the 100-yard backstroke record twice Saturday as the Susquehanna University Men's Swimming and Diving team capped a successful second day of competition at the Landmark Conference Championship in Germantown, Maryland.
Grove set the school record in the preliminary races in the morning and then broke the record again with a first-place time of 51.98 seconds in the evening finals race.
Grove also helped the River Hawks to a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard Medley Relay swimming the opening leg of the relay as he teamed with Shane Sullivan, Ryan Rizzuto and Brett Walker for a time of 1:35.68.
Sullivan followed up the relay with a fourth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and Rizzuto hit the podium with an eighth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.
James Orzolek led three swimmers to the podium in the 200-yard freestyle with a second place finish in a time of 1:43.70, Walker was just .06 seconds back in third place and Owen Kelly was seventh with a time of 1:48.77.
Owen Madden took sixth in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:24.84 and then swam the leadoff leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay as he teamed with Walker, Kelly and Orzolek for a second place finish in 7:03.76.
Susquehanna moved up to third place in the team standings. Catholic leads with 637.5 points followed by Scranton (417) and Susquehanna (393.5). Drew is fourth (367) while Elizabethtown (192), Marywood (156) and Goucher (112) round out the team standings.
Competition concludes Sunday afternoon with the final day of competition in the Landmark Championships.
