Successful Start to 2012 for SU Track & Field
Results
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Six first-place finishes added up to a
successful day for the Susquehanna men’s and women’s
track & field teams at their annual Orange & Maroon
Classic. The meet marked the first home event of the season for the
Crusaders, as well as their first meet in 2012.
The Crusaders enjoyed a highly successful day in the field events.
Sophomore Seth Landgraf (Millersburg,
Pa./Millersburg Area), the reigning Landmark Conference
Male Field Rookie of the Year, came in fourth in the weight throw
with a throw of 13.60m, more than a full meter better than the
fifth-place finisher. In the same event, Dylan
Gavin was sixth (12.09m) and Dan Smith (South
Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) was seventh
(11.17m).
Ken Schetroma (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia
Area) continued what is already an impressive career with
a first-place finish in the shot put (14.33m). Smith was fifth
(12.71m) and Landgraf took seventh (12.04m).
In the men’s long jump, Greg Swierzewski
finished tied for second with a jump of 6.16m and in the pole
vault, Andrew Torok (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern
Regional) also earned a second-place finish with his mark
of 3.95m, tied for a personal-best.
The distance medley team of Robby Caulfield (Setauket,
N.Y./Ward Melville), Brendon Albaugh (Ewing,
N.J./The Peddie School), Austin Iovoli (Victor,
N.Y./Victor) and Joe Zamadics (West Chester,
Pa./West Chester East) tied for first with Franklin &
Marshall by posting a time of 10:48.90. Zamadics then proceeded to
win the 800m (2:01.93) title.
Dan Martin (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) ran to a
fifth-place finish in the one-mile run, posting a time of 4:42.99,
with Dan Reinhart (Manakin Sabot, Va./Lenox
Memorial) taking seventh (4:45.24).
Ben Wilson (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) and
Ross Koehler (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) went
three-four in the 400 meter dash with respective times of 53.84 and
53.98. In the same event, Chance King
(Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and Matt
Erford (Shrewsbury, Pa./Loyola Blakefield) took seventh
and eighth with times of 54.47 and 54.95.
In the 5000m, Paul Crowe (Boalsburg, Pa./State College
Area) took home second (16:17.32) and teammate
Alex Price (Skytop, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) was
the fourth-place finisher (16:51.93).
SU boasted another first-place finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay
with performances from Wilson, Erford, Zamadics and King, all of
whom combined to post a winning time of 3:35.07.
For the women, Jess Ranck (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg
Area) was second in the weight throw with a career-best
toss of 12.44m. Ranck also went on to take 10th in the
shot put (9.34m).
In the long jump, Kristin Stam (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro
Area) was second overall (4.95m) and Jessica
Palmer-Bacon and Jennifer Tims
(Campbell, N.Y./Campbell-Savona) tied for second with
jumps of 4.53m.
Stam took home a victory by winning the triple jump with a distance
of 10.91 while Thanida Sermsuwan (Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was fourth (9.97m). Stam also
went on to take second in the 60m hurdles (10.07).
Julie Scales (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor
Livingston) accounted for another first-place finish for
the Crusaders by winning the pole vault with a mark of 2.90.
Meanwhile, Emily Carson (Caldwell, N.J./James
Caldwell) was one of four athletes who tied for third in
the high jump, recording a mark of 1.42m.
In the distance medley, the women took second as the team of
Maggie Storch (Troy, Pa./Troy Area),
Brooke Linders (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks
West), Teresa McHale (Hauppauge,
N.Y./Hauppauge) and Shannon
Galvin (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) placed
second with a time of 13:24.30.
Meanwhile, the 4 x 200 team of Jenelle Toter (Fishers
Ferry, Pa./Line Mountain), Kelsey
Hermick (Hallstead, Pa./Elk Lake), Kate
Wiley (Sellersville, Pa./Pennrdige) and Sermsuwan were
fourth (1:57.97), finishing just over three seconds behind the
first-place team.
Laura Alleva (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) placed
second in the 400m dash (1:02.84) while Storch took third in the
800m run with her time of 2:33.31. Two places behind her was Galvin
(2:37.38), whose time marked a three-second PR.
The relay success continued in the 4 x 400m as Wiley, Tims, Teresa
McHale and Alleva ran to a second-place finish with their mark of
4:27.15.
Wrapping up the women’s action was the 3000m run in which
Carly Bass (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) finished
sixth (12:03.88).
The teams have a quick turnaround as they compete in a two-day
Bucknell meet on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28.
