SU Men Take Home First at Outdoor Opener


HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Susquehanna's outdoor track & field season officially got underway on Saturday as the Crusaders competed at the Juniata Quad Meet. In what was a team scored event, the SU men's team took first overall while the women placed second.

The men's team racked up 191 points to edge second-place Juniata, which had 167 points. The women's team finished with 180 points, finishing behind only Juniata (220).

In the men's 400 meter run, SU swept the five through seven spots, with Matt Erford (Shrewsbury, Pa.,/Loyola Blakefield) taking fifth (52.58), Ryan Lopes (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) sixth (52.62) and Ben Wilson (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) seventh (53.30).

SU dominated the 800 meter run, earning six of the top 10 spots. Joe Zamadics (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) was the team's top finisher, placing third with his time of 2:02.07. Brendon Albaugh (Ewing, N.J./The Peddie School) was just behind (2:02.47), followed by Dan Martin (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) (2:04.99), who took fifth.

Zamadics went on to win the 1500 meter run with his time of 4:09.61, two seconds ahead of the runner up from Goucher. Martin was third with his time of 4:14.95 while Austin Iovoli (Victor, N.Y./Victor) placed fourth (4:15.44).

Paul Crowe (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) earned a second-place finish in the 3000 meter, finishing with a time of 8:56.65.

Chance King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) picked up six third-place points in the 400 hurdles (58.98) while in the steeplechase, Dan Reinhart (Manakin Sabot, Va./Lenox Memorial) also took third (10:06.90), followed by Justin Zarzaca (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) in fourth (10:21.13), a 10-second PR for the senior.

In the field events, Brian Etz (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) was the team's top finisher in the high jump, earning fourth (1.68m). Etz also earned third in the long jump with his mark of 5.74m. Teammate Chad Shultz (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) came in fifth in the event (5.47m). Shultz also earned six points in the triple jump by placing third with his jump of 11.94m.

Thrower Ken Schetroma (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) picked up right where he left off in the indoor season by winning the shot put with his toss of 14.10m.The junior also finished third in the discus (36.58m), followed by Seth Landgraf (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg Area) in fourth (35.98m).

Schetroma capped off his day with a second-place throw in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.29m. Landgraf was fourth (39.87m), a PR.

In the javelin, freshman Jared Minori (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) placed third (57.35) to round out the field events.

The team returns home next weekend to host the annual J.T. Invitational.
