WAVERLY, Iowa – Five Susquehanna track & field athletes have officially qualified for and will compete in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships from May 26-28.
Senior mid-distance runner Ashley West will compete in both the 800 meter and 1500 meter runs. Junior Gabby Alguire will compete in the javelin, senior sprinter Kwane Hayle will run the 100 meter dash while senior Jared Minori and sophomore Alex Messick will both compete in the javelin.
This marks the second-straight season West has qualified for the outdoor championship meet. Last year, West competed in the 800 meter run, placing 17th overall. She enters this year's outdoor championship ranked 18th in the 800 meter with a time of 2:10.75 and 21st in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:32.26. West is a two-time indoor championship competitor in the 800m, earning All-America status in 2014. This past season, she also qualified for and ran the mile at the NCAA championship meet for the first time in her career.
Alguire, meanwhile, earned All-America status for the second time at last year's championships placing fifth overall, two places higher than her seventh-place finish as a freshman. Alguire is currently ranked first in all of Division III with her throw of 47.42 meters (155'7").
Hayle makes his second NCAA appearance as he qualified and competed in the 2015 Indoor Championships in the 60 meter dash. This is his first 100 meter outdoor qualification and he enters this year's championship ranked 12th with a school-record time of 10.62.
Minori has now qualified for the outdoor championships each season he has been at Susquehanna. As a freshman, he finished 13th, as a sophomore 10th and earned his first All-America status as a junior with his fifth-place finish. He heads to the championship ranked fifth among all Division III javelin throwers with his mark of 65.30 meters (214'3").
Finally, Messick is heading to his second-straight NCAA Championship after finishing 15th at last year's meet. He is currently ranked 10th in the javelin with a throw of 62.20 meters (204'1").
