LEWISBURG, Pa. – Susquehanna's men's and women's cross country teams did not have to travel far to open their season as both competed at the Bison Open at Bucknell University on Saturday morning.
The men's team had a particularly solid showing in a field that included runners from Bloomsburg, Juniata and the host Bison. Senior Ian Quinlan (Eagle View, Pa./Methacton/Lehigh) was SU's top finisher on the three-mile course with a 10th-place time of 15:16. Just five seconds separated the sixth through 10th place finishers and Quinlan's time was a personal-best, beating his previous mark of 15:21, set at last year's Bison Open.
Classmate Joe Zamadics (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) finished in a time of 15:35, good for 17th overall. Freshman Paul Crowe (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) had an impressive debut, posting a time of 15:52.
Rounding out the top-30 finishers for the Crusaders was classmate Alex Price (Skytop, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) (15:56). Price and Crowe were two of several freshmen who had impressive debuts. Rookie Austin Iovoli (Victor, N.Y./Victor) ran the course in 16:15 and classmate Evan Skelton (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished in 16:32. Sandwiched between Iovoli and Skelton were junior Brendan Kane (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) (16:17) and senior Dan Martin (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) (16:19).
The women had two runners finish in the top 45 in the field of 68 runners. Sarah Dickerson (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern HS) posted the top time for the women (19:48) while Michelle Kraske (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) followed her with her time of 20:08.
Nine seconds behind her was freshman Fatima Resendiz-Zavala (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) (20:17). Other top five-finishers for the team included Shannon Galvin (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) (20:31) and Casey Hess (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) (20:46).
Another first-year runner in addition to Resendiz-Zavala who had solid showings was Maggie Storch (Troy, Pa./Troy Area) (20:54).
Both teams are off next weekend before returning to action on Sept. 17 when they host the annual Ashley Shell Tomlinson Invitational at Sassafras Fields.
