CARLISLE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational on Saturday as the men competed in the 4k and 8k races while the women raced a 4k. In a meet in which only the top three runners scored for their teams, as opposed to the normal top five, both squads had solid performances.
The men’s team was split between an 8K and a 4K race. In the 8k, two upperclassmen were used to help to pace three freshmen through their first 8k that served as preparation for next week’s Paul Short Invitational. The group of five was instructed to hold a tempo pace of 5:40 per mile through most of the race, although the muddy conditions through the middle of the course made that tough. Alex Price (Skytop, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) was top finisher for the Crusaders with a time of 28:42. Dan Martin (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) (29:13), Brendan Kane (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) (29:18), Paul Crowe (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) (29:26) and Evan Skelton (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (29:52) were the other top-five SU finishers. With the conservative pace, the men finished 12th of 21 schools.
Head coach Marty Owens held some of the team’s top runners to the shorter 4k to be fresh for the Paul Short Invitational. Senior Ian Quinlan (Eagle View, Pa./Methacton/Lehigh) led the way for the Crusaders by finishing third with a time 12:40. Classmate Joe Zamadics (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) was next across the line in 13:13, followed by Austin Iovoli (Victor, N.Y./Victor) in 13:52. Robby Caulfield (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), running in his first race of the year, finished in 14:13. As a team, the Crusaders placed seventh 22 schools in the 4k.
In their last tune-up before their first 6k of the season, the
women ran a strong race over the 4k course. The women ran as
a pack with the top seven Crusader women separated by just 58
seconds. Carol Giblin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Christian Brothers
Academy) was the first Crusader across the line in 17:01,
followed closely by Shannon Galvin (Jamison, Pa./Central
Bucks South) (17:04), Fatima
Resendiz-Zavala (Rockville, Md./Richard
Montgomery) (17:06) and Michelle Kraske (Horsham,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) (17:09). The women finished
11th of 23 schools.
Both squads have a short week as they travel to the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, hosted by Lehigh University.
