BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freezing temps, wind and snow did not provide ideal conditions for the Landmark Conference Cross Country Championships but the Susquehanna men's team put together an impressive performance nonetheless. SU grabbed second overall while senior Ian Quinlan (Eagle View, Pa./Methacton/Lehigh) took home the individual title.
The original 8k course was shortened due to a fallen tree on the course.
Moravian, the host school, won the overall title with 38 points while the Crusaders were second with 49 points. Scranton, Juniata, USMMA, Goucher, Drew and Catholic rounded out the eight-team field.
Quinlan nabbed the overall title with his time of 24:23.30 in the shortened distance, which was held on the campus of Lehigh University. Quinlan narrowly edged Moravian's Matthew Lutcza, who posted a time of 24:24.80 and was named the Landmark Conference Male Runner of the Year.
Quinlan's classmate, Joe Zamadics (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), joined Quinlan in the top-10 as he ran to an eighth-place finish with a time of 25:20.20.
Four other runners were top-20 finishers for the Crusaders. Senior Justin Zarzaca (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) was 11th (25:51.80) and was followed closely behind by rookie Paul Crowe (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area), who placed 12th with his time of 25:53.10.
Robby Caulfield (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) (26:25.10) and freshman Alex Price (Skytop, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) (26:33.10) took home 17th and 18th, respectively.
This marks the first time the SU men have not won the Landmark Conference title. The Crusaders entered as four-time league champions.
Up next is the NCAA Regionals on Nov. 12 which will be held on the campus of DeSales University.
