ALTOONA, Pa. – Susquehanna men’s and women’s cross country teams headed to Altoona, Pa. on Saturday to compete in the Juniata Cross Country Invitational where the men’s team placed second and the women earned fourth.
The race served as a preview of the Landmark Conference championship course as Juniata is the host this fall.
The men took second despite being without one of their top runners in Paul Crowe (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) and were just one point out of the top spot. SU tallied 54 points just behind Moravian’s 53 first-place points.
Alex Price (Skytop, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) was the top finisher for the men, finishing the 8k course in a personal-best time of 27:13.50, less than a second off the top time and good for fifth overall. Just two places behind him was John Crowe (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area), who ran a 27:20.20.
Four other men placed in the top 20 for the Crusaders as freshman Colin Ebarhardt (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./North Sachem) was 12th (27:43.00). In addition, Dan Isenberg (Danville, Pa./Warrior Run) (28:04.50), Cory Edwards (Franklin, N.J./Walkill Valley) (28:11.90) and Sal D’Angelo (Glenside, Pa./Springfield Twp.) (28:16.40) took home the 16-18 spots, respectively. Edwards and D’Angelo both set PRs.
For the women, they raced without three top seniors in Carly Bass (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive), Michelle Kraske (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Carol Giblin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy). As a result, the top two finishers for SU were freshmen and the squad finished with 75 points, just five points shy of Moravian in third place.
Freshman Ashley West (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) put together a fifth-place time, crossing the 6k finish line in 23:59.40. Classmate Rachel Bachman (Chalfon, Pa./Central Bucks South) was next across the finish for SU and her time of 25:12.00 placed her 12th overall.
Rounding out the top 20 finishers for the women were Sarah Dickerson (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) (25:44.90) who was 16th, followed by Diane Lindenmuth (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) (26:12.10) in 18th.
The Crusaders are back in action next Saturday as they travel to Lock Haven.
