MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Susquehanna softball team took to the
road on Sunday to face an undefeated Montclair State squad and
thanks to the Crusaders’ game two win, handed the Red Hawks
their first loss of the season.
The Crusaders (11-7) dropped the opener by a 7-2 score but game two
was a complete different story as they came away with the 7-3 win
over Montclair State (14-1), marking the Red Hawks’ first
loss of the spring.
Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights)
finished the day 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI, and
Lisa Finizio (Oakland, N.J./Indian
Hills) recorded three hits, including a triple in game
two.
In game two, starter Morgan Lewis
(Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) went the
distance and tossed seven innings of three-run ball. Montclair
actually struck first with a solo run in the first inning and added
another run in the second. However, Lewis gave up just one more run
over the remainder of the game.
SU tied the game at two-all after back-to-back triples off the bats
of Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks
East) and Finizio, followed by a LaCoe RBI single up the
middle that plated Finizio.
Susquehanna erupted for a five-run fifth inning thanks in part to
the team’s five hits in the inning. Larissa
Luu (Montandon, Pa./Milton) opened the inning with
a single and scored on a Finizio single to left field. LaCoe
followed with another single to left field, driving in Luu, and
Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) added a two-run RBI double down the left field
line. The final run came on a Madison Clark (Blue Springs,
Mo./Blue Springs) single up the middle that sent home
Gilbert.
The Red Hawks got one run back in the fifth to cut the lead to four
(7-3), but Lewis shut them down for the final two innings to seal
the win for her squad.
In game one, the Red Hawks pushed across a run in the first before
putting together a three-run fourth to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Montclair added another three-spot in the fifth for a 7-0 lead.
LaCoe immediately got two of those runs back with a two-run homer
to right center that also scored Lauren Gilbert
(Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) who opened the
inning with a double.
SU left a runner stranded in the seventh as Montclair State held on
for the win.
The Crusaders are back on the road on March 29 with a doubleheader
at Gettysburg, starting at 3 p.m.
