Women Can’t Hang on Against Moravian

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Despite shooting nearly 50 percent from three-point range, the Susquehanna women’s basketball team was unable to come up with a win, falling 80-68 against Moravian on Saturday evening.

The Crusaders (4-14, 1-6) did hold a 10-point lead less than midway through the first half but could not hold onto that advantage.

Susquehanna’s Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa./Penns Valley Area) had a standout performance, netting a game-high 27 points, with 18 coming from beyond the arc. Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack) had 10 points of her own to go along with a team-best nine boards. She also chipped in three assists and two steals.

One of the largest differences in the game was on the glass, as Moravian (11-7, 4-3) out-rebounded SU 45-36. The Greyhounds also had 17 offensive boards and held a decisive 20-10 edge in points in the paint.

It was 4-0 Crusaders just 90 seconds into the action and SU went up by seven (13-6) on a Palazzi jumper under four minutes later.

A jumper from Ariana Stowe (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) at the 12:31 mark put her squad ahead by double figures (19-9), but a dominant 23-2 run from Moravian erased that lead and put Susquehanna in an 11-point hole (32-21) inside the four-minute mark.

Moravian proceeded to lead by 12 with just 60 seconds left in the period but went into halftime up by only nine (41-32) after a McCaffrey three-pointer with 15 seconds on the clock.

Five minutes into the second half, Moravian led by nine (55-46), but just five minutes later Susquehanna found itself again trailing by 11, 59-48.

It remained a double-digit deficit for the Crusaders until the clock hit 3:04 which was when two Palazzi free throws cut the lead to eight (71-63).

Unfortunately the lead never got any smaller and Moravian sank four free throws over the final 41 seconds to hold off SU.

The Crusaders are back on the road next weekend. They travel to USMMA on Friday for a 5:30 game, followed by a 2 p.m. contest at Drew on Saturday.
