SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sophomore Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) broke out for 26 points, 12 rebounds and six steals to play a large role in leading her Crusader women's basketball team to a 69-53 home win against Baptist Bible.
Williams picked up the team's first double-double of the season in what also marked SU's (1-3) first victory of the 2012-13 campaign. Senior Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack) joined Williams in double figures with 13 points and seven boards. As a team, the Crusaders out-rebounded the Defenders (0-3) by a 49-43 mark, had 13 steals to their five and finished with four blocks.
Neither team took control for the first 10-plus minutes of the game as the largest lead over that span was a five-point Susquehanna advantage (11-6) less than five minutes into the game.
Inside the eight-minute mark of the first half, the Crusaders maintained a three-point lead, 20-17, after a Williams layup. That was part of 16-2 SU run that made it 24-20 with 2:23 on the clock. By the time the half ended, Susquehanna held a 16-point lead (38-22) after a Palazzi free throw with 15 seconds remaining marked the final point of the half.
It was all Susquehanna from that point on as the team went up by 20 (48-28) on a Williams jumper at the 14:21 mark. Shannon Grunwald's (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) jumper just over three minute later upped it to a 21-point SU advantage (56-35) and a Williams trey with 5:10 on the clock put the Crusaders ahead by a game-high 23 points, 63-40, to put the game out of reach for Baptist Bible.
SU returns to action after Thanksgiving on Nov. 28 with a 6 p.m. game at Marymount (Va.).
