WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball team was back on the court Friday night and defeated Eastern University 53-49 on the opening night of the Hoops for Hounds Tournament, hosted by Lycoming College.
Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) broke out for a game-high18 points in what marked a homecoming of sorts for the sophomore while Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) had a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards.
The Crusaders (4-6) trailed 33-26 at halftime before limiting Eastern (4-7) to just 16 second-half points while putting 27 points of their own on the board.
Susquehanna will now face Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in Saturday's championship game at 3 p.m.
The first half started on a promising note as Williams' three-pointer gave SU an early 6-2 lead just over two minutes into the game. The lead swapped hands for the next several possessions until Eastern took the lead for good in the first half (14-13) on a Meghan Nowak layup.
By the time the half ended, the Crusaders found themselves down by seven, 33-36, despite two Williams free throws that marked the final scoring of the period.
Eastern went up 43-35 after six-plus minutes of play in the second half before Susquehanna went on a 9-0 run and took a 44-43 lead on an Eleni Dimou (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) layup at the 9:24 mark.
Scoring was at a premium for the final minutes of the game but a Monahan three with 4:18 remaining gave SU the 49-47 lead and the Crusaders never relinquished that lead, holding on for the 53-49 victory.
