SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Both basketball programs are represented as the Pepsi/SAAC Rookies of the Month for December as freshmen Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa. / Lourdes Regional) and Steven Weidlich (Watchung, N.J. / Watchung Hills) have been selected.
Komara scored in double figures in all four of SU’s games in December. Against Scranton on Dec. 7, Komara registered a double-double by scoring 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, grabbing 11 rebounds and recording four assists and four steals. On Dec. 17 against Virginia Wesleyan, Komara tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
In the Hoops for Hounds Tournament at Lycoming, Komara scored 11 points versus Richard Stockton and notched another double-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and six steals against Lycoming in the championship game en route to being named the Tournament MVP.
This season, Komara has been the team’s leading scorer in four games and the top rebounder in six. She is averaging 10.4 ppg and 6.2 rpg while helping the Crusaders to a 5-5 mark.
Weidlich scored in double figures in five of six games in December and has been the Crusaders’ leading scorer in four games this season while guiding SU to a 7-4 record.
Against Elizabethtown on Dec. 1, Weidlich scored nine points and recorded five rebounds and five assists. Versus conference opponent Scranton on Dec. 7, Weidlich tallied 20 points behind 6-of-11 shooting from long distance.
In the Monarch Classic against host King’s on Dec. 14, Weidlich registered 21 points (8-of-10 FT) and scored 11 points in the Crusaders’ 66-53 win over Wilkes the following day.
Weidlich scored 17 points and recorded seven rebounds as SU defeated Sacred Heart of Puerto Rico 72-64 on Dec. 20. The rookie scored 13 points versus then-No. 23 St. Mary’s (Md.) while recording five boards in the loss.
This year, Weidlich is second on the team with 170 points (15.5 ppg) and 31 made three-pointers (36.5 percent). He leads the team with 14 steals and is second with 28 assists.
On Wednesday night, Komara and SU host King’s (Pa.) at 6 p.m. followed by Weidlich and the Crusaders against Misericordia at 8 p.m.
