SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Both basketball teams are represented as the Pepsi/SAAC February Rookies of the Month as freshmen Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa. / Lourdes Regional) and Steven Weidlich (Watchung, N.J. / Watchung Hills) have been honored.
Komara helped the women’s team to a 12-12, 6-8 record this year, an four-win improvement from a year ago, including three additional conference victories. Komara averaged 11.9 ppg, 7.2 rpg and 3.6 apg while shooting 45.2 percent from three-point range during her rookie campaign.
Against Drew on Feb. 1 (W, 62-43), Komara scored 15 points (7-15 FG) and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds while recording six steals and four assists. Versus Goucher on Feb. 5 (W, 69-52), she scored 11 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and distributed seven assists.
Versus Catholic and Moravian, Komara totaled 30 points (13-21 FG), 16 rebounds and 17 assists. At Juniata on Feb. 19, she scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out six assists.
This year, Komara is currently second in the Landmark Conference in three-point percentage, third in steals, sixth in rebounding and assists.
Weidlich, meanwhile, was named the Landmark Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 17-23 after his career-high of 29 points at Merchant Marine on Feb. 22 (W, 87-77), helping the Crusaders clinch the No. 2 seed for the Landmark Conference Playoffs.
During the week, which included a buzzer-beating win over Juniata, Weidlich shot 56.0 percent from the field and 52.6 percent from behind the arc as SU clinched its first playoff berth since 2011-12.
On Wednesday, Feb. 26, Weidlich and SU defeated No. 3 seed Catholic 69-66 to advance to their first Landmark Conference title game since 2009. Weidlich scored 17 points, shooting 5-of-11 from beyond the arc, and distributed a team-high seven assists.
Weidlich is second on the team in scoring with 377 points (15.1 ppg) and second in rebounds with 4.7 rpg. In the conference, Weidlich is second in three-pointers made, second in minutes played, eighth in scoring, 10th in assists and 10th in steals.
Weidlich and No. 2 seed SU travel to No. 1 seed Scranton on Saturday, March 1 for the 2013-14 Landmark Conference Championship. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
