March 19: Susquehanna 14, Lycoming 12
SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Sophomore midfielder Sarah Wright
(Princeton, N.J./Princeton HS) scored a game-high five goals to
help lead Susquehanna University to a 14-12 come-from-behind win
over visiting Lycoming College in a non-conference game at
Sassafras Fields on March 19.
After jumping off to a commanding 4-1 lead, Susquehanna (5-1
overall) trailed Lycoming (2-4 overall), 7-5, at the half.
The Crusaders wasted little time in the second half before
freshman midfielder Ally Bauer (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) netted
what would be the first of seven straight SU goals. Sophomore
midfielder Sara Franckowiak (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central)
followed with her first of two goals before Wright gave the Orange
and Maroon an 8-7 lead on an assist from freshman midfielder
Brittany McCann (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) with 26 minutes, 44
seconds of play remaining.
Senior midfielder Katelyn Deese (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) was
unassisted in scoring the 16th goal of the game,
Susquehanna’s ninth, before freshman midfielder Erin Dyer
(West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) made good on an open goal to
put the Crusaders ahead by three.
Franckowiak hit Wright for a goal, before Franckowiak notched her
own with 12:37 of play lingering, giving the Crusaders a
comfortable 12-7 lead.
Lycoming then converted two free-position shots to bring the game
within three; however, Wright answered with her fifth and final
score of the day on a pass from sophomore midfielder Kayla
MacMillan [Bath, Maine/Hyde (Conn.)]. The Lady Warriors again
responded to put the game at 13-10.
Although the one-minute mark had come and gone, play was all but
over. Deese netted her second of the game with just 47 seconds
remaining on the clock, prior to the visiting squad scoring at 0:34
and 0:25, respectively, to end the game with a 14-12 Susquehanna
decision.
Bauer joined Deese and Franckowiak with two goals apiece, while
Dyer, freshman midfielder Marra Landino (Brownsville, Vt./Kimball
Union Academy) and senior midfielder Cindy Wilson (West Chester,
Pa./Henderson) each scored one goal.
Sophomore midfielder Corinne Woodward (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank
Regional) led all players with four groundballs and added three
caused turnovers. Wilson also tallied three caused turnovers and
scooped up three groundballs.
In goal for the Crusaders, senior Meredith Tompeck (Randolph,
N.J./Randolph) made eight saves to secure the win.
