MADISON, N.J. – An early, 5-3 deficit did not faze the Susquehanna women's lacrosse as the Crusaders came back to defeat Drew 16-12 and in the process earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament.
SU (14-1, 3-1) will host these same Rangers (8-8, 2-3) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a semifinal matchup.
Emma Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Michelle McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) busted out for five goals apiece, accounting for more than half of the Crusaders' scoring output. Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) added two goals for SU and McGinniss also led the team with seven draw controls.
Goalie Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) had another solid outing in the net, making 12 saves and causing three turnovers.
As a team, SU matched Drew in shots with 33 apiece but won 18 draw controls to the Rangers' 12 and connected on five free position shots.
SU went up 3-1 early following back-to-back-to-back goals in less than five minutes. Drew responded, however, by rattling off four unanswered goals and scored the final one of the half to take a two-goal lead (7-5) into halftime.
The teams traded goals to open the second half and two-consecutive McGinniss goals knotted the game at eight with 19:47 still to play.
Drew took a 10-9 edge at the 14:54 mark before the Crusaders essentially put the game out of reach with five straight goals, from five different players, for a 15-10 lead.
While Drew scored two of the final three goals of the game, it was too little too late as SU came away with the win and the right to host Wednesday's semifinal contest.
