SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women’s lacrosse team dominated from start to finish in its Landmark Conference semifinal match-up with Drew and advanced to the Championship game with an 18-5 win over the Rangers on Wednesday afternoon.
The Crusaders (15-1), who were playing in their first-ever Landmark semifinal game, will now play in their first-ever championship game when they play No. 1 seed Catholic on Saturday in Washington, D.C. Game time is TBA.
The Crusaders played solidly on both ends of the field. Erin Dyer (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) led the offensive attack with a five-goal performance to go along with one assist. Lindsey Derstine (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) chipped in four goals and an assist and three other players scored at least two goals.
In goal, Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) made some highlight-reel saves and finished the game with 11 stops while surrendering only five goals.
SU had 20 more shots than did Drew (42-22) and forced 19 Rangers turnovers while committing just 14 of its own.
Susquehanna jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after less than 10 minutes of action. The Rangers (8-9) were able to net a goal with 18:56 on the clock to make it 3-1 but the Susquehanna defense held Drew off the scoreboard for the next 14 minutes while upping its lead to 10-1 over that span.
Drew scored back-to-back goals to make it a 10-3 contest before the Crusaders closed out the half with two unanswered goals of their own to take a 13-3 advantage into halftime.
SU gave up only two second-half goals while scoring five of its own, including the first three of the period. Three players accounted for the five goals with the final two coming from Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove).
