CHESTER, Pa. – In their first meeting since 2007, the Susquehanna women's lacrosse team defeated Widener 15-7 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders (6-3) used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Pride (2-8) with five players recording at least two goals each. Michelle McGinniss (Randolph, N.J. / Randolph), Emma Ehler (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham), Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) and Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J. / Columbia) all registered hat tricks to lead SU with Reid also scoring the 100th goal of her collegiate career.
Ehler and Reid fired off 15 and 11 shots, respectively, as SU outshot Widener 44-25. Netminder Alyssa Rothman (Trooper, Pa. / Methacton) recorded the win, as the sophomore made six saves while facing 25 shots.
SU started the contest with four unanswered goals in the first six minutes of play with Kelcie Ehler (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) starting the scoring with a goal at 27:56.
Widener notched consecutive scores to trim the SU lead to 4-2 before the Crusaders rattled off three-straight goals, including two by Crane, to take a 7-2 lead with 14:23 to play in the opening half.
However, the Pride responded with three goals in the next 10 minutes to trim the Crusader advantage down to 7-5. But goals by Kelcie Ehler and Crane in the last minute gave SU a 9-5 lead at intermission.
The Pride scored the opening goal only 20 seconds into the second period to get within 9-6 but the Crusaders answered with five straight scores, including three unassisted goals by Emma Ehler to take a commanding 14-6 lead with 17:54 remaining.
A goal by Widener with a little over nine minutes remaining cut the SU edge down to 14-7, but a Reid score with 1:17 left sealed the road win for the Crusaders.
