SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A back-and-forth start to the game suddenly turned against the Susquehanna women's lacrosse team as they fell 22-11 to visiting Landmark Conference foe Catholic on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams entered the game with perfect 3-0 conference records on the line and it was the Cardinals (8-4, 4-0) who came away with the win.
Michelle McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored five of her team's 11 goals to go along with 10 draw controls. Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) added two goals and two assists and Emma Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished with two goals for SU (7-4, 3-1).
Turnovers were costly for SU, as the team committed 22 on the day while Catholic had just 16. The Cardinals also out-shot Susquehanna 41-26 and both teams went 4-for-8 on free position shots.
McGinniss scored two of the game's first three goals and it stood 2-1 Susquehanna after just over three minutes of play.
Ehler's free position goal at the 9:55 mark kept the Crusaders ahead, 5-4, before Catholic tied it a mere 40 seconds later. Then, with 7:34 to play, Madeline Wilson put the Cardinals in the lead (6-5) and it turned out to be a lead they would not relinquish.
Catholic's defense held SU to just one goal over the final 9:55 of the half and eventually went into halftime holding a 10-6 edge.
Susquehanna was out-scored 12-5 over the final 30 minutes of play. Catholic opened up a 10-goal lead (20-10) on a Lindsay Brophy goal with 8:20 to play and Brophy scored the game's final two goals to make it 22-11. She finished with seven goals and two assists.
The Crusaders remain at home to host Merchant Marine on April 19 at 1 p.m. The team's senior members will be honored prior to the start of the game.
