Women’s Lacrosse Secures No. 2 Seed

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's lacrosse team used a solid second half to pull away from visiting USMMA to grab a 14-9 victory on Senior Day. The win secured the No. 2 seed for the Crusaders in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament.

Susquehanna will host No. 3 seed Scranton in a semifinal on May 4 at 7 p.m. The Crusaders defeated Scranton 18-8 earlier this month.

SU (8-8, 4-2) and the Mariners (8-6 0-6) were tied at six at halftime before the Crusaders out-scored the Mariners 8-3 over the final 30 minutes of the game.

Caroline Rabiecki and Annie McElaney had four goals apiece, with McElaney also adding one assist, four draw controls and two ground balls. Shannon Kinney had two goals, six ground balls and five draw controls. With her six ground balls, she eclipsed 100 for her career.

Merchant Marine led 2-1 less than 10 minutes into the game before SU strung together three unanswered goals, with two from Kinney, to lead 4-2 with 17:12 remaining.

It remained a two-goal game (5-3) midway through the half before the Mariners scored three unanswered goals of their own to pull ahead 6-5 with 5:42 to play. Brooke Klair scored the tying goal just 20 seconds later, though, and it remained tied at six at halftime.

SU netted the first four goals of the second half to ultimately take the lead for good. The teams traded goals and USMMA was within three (12-9) at the 7:10 mark but Una Heinzerling and Brooke Burnett scored the final two goals of the game to give SU the 14-9 win.

Prior to the start of the game, the team honored its five senior members: Annie McElaney, Zoe Lycett, Becky McHugh, Carolyn Figliola and Alyssa Rothman.
