Women's Basketball Uses Late Run to Beat USMMA, 51-37

KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- Susquehanna University's junior forward/center Samantha Cartwright (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) tallied team-highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead visiting Susquehanna past the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 51-37, in a Landmark Conference women's basketball game at James W. Liebertz Gymnasium on Jan. 23.

Cartwright made four of seven field goals and all four of her free throws. She also led all players with three assists.

Susquehanna (9-9, 3-4 Landmark) trailed the USMMA (6-9, 1-6 Landmark), 10-2, just 3 minutes, 17 seconds into the game but used its first of two 11-0 runs in the game to go up 13-10 with 10:15 remaining in the half.

SU posted its largest lead of the half on a Cartwright layup with 6:18 left to make the score 24-13 before the Mariners scored six unanswered points to bring the score to 24-19. SU would make a foul shot with 1:41 left for the final point of the half.

Crusaders sophomore guard Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa./Penns Valley Area) notched a team-high two steals and a game-high two blocked shots, while teammate and junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) tied a game-high with two three-pointers made.

SU's senior forward Samantha Jansson (Cumbola, Pa./Nativity B.V.M.) chipped in 10 points, and junior guard Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North Schuylkill) added nine points.

The teams went back-and-forth on the scoreboard over the first 14:49 of the second half. During that time, the score fluctuated between a five- and nine-point Susquehanna lead before the USMMA cut the score to 40-37 with 5:11 left. Senior guard Ashley Watkins (La Habra Heights, Calif./Rosary) answered the Mariners layup with a three-pointer to begin the second Susquehanna 11-0 run, which closed out the game.

The USMMA was led by senior guard Brooke Picillo (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger), who made a game-high eight steals and scored a team-high 11 points. Teammate and junior forward Janay Weathers (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) pulled down a game-high 13 boards, while senior forward Kiersten Healy (Plainville, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) dished out a team-high two assists.

Susquehanna pulled down 46 rebounds to 34 for the USMMA and outshot the Mariners from the field, 19-for-53 (35.8 percent) to 13-for-52 (25.0 percent).
