Jerry Foley, Head Coach of the 2009-10 Landmark Conference
women's Coaching Staff of the Year, became the leader of
Susquehanna University's men's and women's swimming & diving
teams, and Director of Aquatics, on June 1, 2009. He is the third
person to hold the coaching position in Susquehanna's history.
"Jerry comes to us with a wealth of education and experience,"
says the university's Director of Athletics Pam Samuelson. "We
think he's going to be a perfect fit at Susquehanna, and we know
that the swimming & diving programs are in good hands."
Coach Foley comes to Susquehanna from Lewisburg (Pa.) Area High
School and NCAA Division I Bucknell University. He was Lewisburg's
head boys' and girls' swimming coach since November 2007, and he
coached Bucknell's swimmers and divers from 1998 to 2006, earning
Patriot League Coach of the Year honors five times.
He also has been the head associate swimming coach of the Sunbury
branch of the Greater Susquehanna Valley (Pa.) YMCA since October
2006. In 2009, his boys' team placed eighth at the National YMCA
short-course championships, while his combined boys' and girls'
squad placed 11th.
Since August 2006, he has worked as a staff recruiter for the
Geisinger Center for Health Research in Danville, Pa.
Foley was an assistant swimming coach and physical education
instructor for the Division I United States Military Academy from
1994 to 1998 and the head coach of Division II Adelphi University
from 1989 to 1994. He also served as a physical education
instructor and the aquatic director while at Adelphi.
During his tenure at Adelphi, he was the co-head coach of the
nationally oriented Long Island Aquatic Club in Merrick, N.Y.
From 1986 to 1989, he worked as the aquatic director and assistant
swimming coach at Deer Park (N.Y.) High School and the head coach
of Deer Park Aquatics, a community-based program.
Foley graduated with honors from the United States Merchant Marine
Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in June
1984. He received his Master of Arts degree in physical education
from Adelphi in January 1990.
Foley's college teams have been consistently successful. He led
the Bucknell men to a Patriot championship in 2003 and the women to
league championships in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. He helped the
U.S. Military Academy win men's Patriot titles in 1995, 1996, 1997
and 1998.
He replaces Dan Phillips, who led the SU swimming & diving
teams for one season during the 2008-09 academic year. Phillips
replaced the late G. Edward "Ged" Schweikert III, who died June 15,
2008, after succumbing to cancer.
Katie Robbins '96 finished her 13th season as an assistant men's
and women's swimming & diving coach in 2008-09. Robbins is one
of the women's program's best success stories.
Coming from a high school that had no swimming team, she became
one of Susquehanna's top distance swimmers and a team captain by
her senior season.
Robbins graduated from SU with a Bachelor of Science degree in
biology and earned a master's degree in education from Bucknell in
1998. She has been teaching science at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Area High
School since 1998.
In the summer, Robbins is a very successful age-group coach. She
took her former hometown team from the bottom of the Susquehanna
Valley Swimming and Diving League to being a top contender within
five years.
