SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Women’s swimming and men’s basketball are represented as the Pepsi/SAAC Rookies of the Month for November with freshmen Erin McElwee (Phoenixville, Pa. / Phoenixville Area) and Steven Weidlich (Watchung, N.J. / Watchung Hills) being honored.
McElwee helped the Crusaders defeat Landmark Conference opponent Catholic 157-110 on Nov. 9 by winning the 100 back (1:02.56) and 200 back (2:16.33).
At the Bucknell Invitational from Nov. 22 to Nov.24, McElwee set three PRs as all three marks were top-ten in program history. In the 200 IM prelims, she swam a personal-best 2:19.68, the ninth-fastest all-time.
In the 100 back, McElwee touched the wall in 1:00.13, the third-best mark in program history. Finally, McElwee posted a mark of 2:12.08 in the 200 back, the fourth-fastest all-time.
Weidlich started all four contests for the Crusaders in November and averaged 34 minutes per game while scoring 77 points (15.4 ppg), grabbing 29 rebounds (5.8 rpg), dishing out 18 assists and recording eight steals.
The rookie is 27-of-71 from the field (38.0 percent) and 14-of-40 from beyond the arc (35.0 percent) while shooting 81.8 percent from the foul line (9-of-11).
Weidlich scored 25 points in his collegiate debut at Lycoming (W, 99-84), the most points scored in a freshman debut since Spenser Spencer ’12 netted 21 against Misericordia on Nov. 15, 2008.
Against King’s (Pa.) in the Pepsi Tip-Off Tournament Championship (L, 73-69), Weidlich scored 22 points, including five three-pointers. So far this season, Weidlich has been the team’s leading scorer in two of the first five contests.
McElwee will be competing in the Ithaca Invitational from Dec. 6-8 while Weidlich and the Crusaders host Landmark opponent Scranton on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.
