Joann Butkus and Ashlee Weingarten won four events and Katie Willis earned three first place finishes to lead the Susquehanna University women's swimming team past Franklin & Marshall Sunday in the first meet following the winter break. The River Hawks posted a 160-102 victory over the Diplomats with seven individual first places swims and a pair of relay victories.
The victory over Franklin & Marshall is the first since 1987-88 and just the third in school history. Susquehanna posted victories in 1984-85 and again in 1987-88. Last year the teams finished in a 131-131 tie.
Butkus, Weingarten and Willis teamed with Erin McElwee for the victory in the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet and then teamed with Jessica Jozefiak for the win in the 400-free relay to end the competition. In between, Butkus posted a first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.64, Weingarten won the 200 butterfly in 2:17.28 and Willis was the top finisher in the 100 free with a time of 54.12.
Weingarten also won the 100 butterfly as Susquehanna took the top three spots in the race. Margaux Palaski was second and Lizzie Richart was third in the event. Butkus also won the 200 medley relay for the River Hawks.
Megan Shaffer and Megan Duck posted individual first-place finishes as well. Shaffer was first in the 200 back with a winning time of 2:12.58 and Duck won the 200 breast in 2:31.28. Duck was also second in the 100 breast and Shaffer was second in the 100 back.
Caitlin Kelly was second in two races with a runner-up finish in both the 200 and 500 free races with times of 2:02.16 and 5:25.46 respectively. Hannah Finton was second in the 1000 free with a time of 11:04.88 and Willis was second in the 50 free as she was edged out by just .10 seconds at the wall.
Susquehanna will swim at Bloomsburg Friday before facing Goucher at home Saturday for the first home meet of the second semester.
