Women Split Tri-Meet at Gettysburg

Joann Butkus swam to two first place finishes and helped the Susquehanna University Women's Swimming and Diving team to a split Saturday in a tri-meet with Messiah College and Gettysburg College at Gettysburg.

Susquehanna (3-1) defeated Messiah 142-119 but dropped a close decision to Gettysburg by a score of 138-123.

Butkus was first in the 200 Breaststroke with a winning time of 2:34.12 and also helped the River Hawks to a first place finish in the last race of the day in the 200 Free Relay. Butkus teamed with Katie Willis, Tori Weems, and Jess Jozefiak to a win with a time of 1:40.37.

Willis added a second place finish in the 200 free and was third in both the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Butkus was also second in the 100 Breast and teamed with Weems, Cate Welch and Maggie Palaski for a third place finish in the meet-opening 200 Medley Relay.

The River Hawks scored points with 1-2 finishes in two races as Megan Shaffer and Caitlin Kelly were the top two finishers in the 100 Free and Abby Condon and Shaffer finished in the top two spots in the 200 Backstroke. Shaffer added a third place finish in the 100 Back while Palaski and Jozefiak finished third and fourth respectively in the 100 Butterfly.

The swimmers are back in action after the Thanksgiving break at the Total Performance Sports Camps Invitational at Kenyon or the Gettysburg Invitational in a split squad pair of events November 30. The Susquehanna divers will compete at the Catholic Invitational Nov. 18.
