Weaver, Weidlich Named Pepsi/SAAC Super Crusaders

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Women’s track and field and men’s basketball are represented as the Susquehanna Pepsi/SAAC Super Crusaders for the period ending Dec. 7. Senior thrower Cameron Weaver (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and sophomore guard Steven Weidlich (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills) have been selected for the award.

Weaver began her indoor season at Saturday’s Bucknell Bison Opener on a high note with a record-breaking performance in the shot put. Her second-place throw of 12.86m extended her program mark and also set a new indoor record for the Landmark Conference.

Weidlich led the men’s basketball Crusaders to a 1-1 week in conference with a loss at Catholic and an overtime win over USMMA. Over that stretch, he averaged 14.5 points per game to with 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

In Saturday’s thrilling, 78-75 overtime win against USMMA, Weidlich’s late heroics at the free-throw line extended the game for the Crusaders. Down by three with only one-tenth of a second left in regulation, Weidlich was fouled behind the arc and sent to the line for three shots.

The sophomore sank all three to send the game to overtime, where he continued to excel at the charity stripe. After USMMA scored five consecutive points to cut its deficit to 75-76 with just over a minute remaining, Weidlich converted two more free throws to keep the Mariners at bay. He finished the game with 17 points, including an impressive 8-of-9 mark from the line.

The Crusaders are 5-1 this season and rank first in the Landmark in rebounds per game (46.8) and opponent field goal percentage (34.3), second in points per game (78.2), and third in free throw percentage (71.2).

Weaver and the track and field team next compete on Friday, Jan. 16 when they host the annual Orange & Maroon Classic at 4 p.m. Weidlich and the men’s basketball team travel to Wilkes-Barre this weekend to compete in the Monarch Classic hosted by King’s (Pa.).
