The Susquehanna University women's track and field team opened the second semester with a strong effort competing against more than 18 teams in the Orange and Maroon Invitational Saturday in the James W. Garrett Sports Complex in Selinsgrove.
The River Hawks recorded a pair of personal bests and accomplished more than was expected of them in the first meet after the long mid-semester break.
"They came back from break last week and we have been working them pretty hard with double sessions every day," said head coach Marty Owens. "I think the extra work last week hit them pretty hard today but it is a long season and we just need to be patient. We (the coaching staff) liked what we saw for the most part today with some nice individual performances."
Hannah Stauffer recorded her best time in the mile with a 5:35.90 and a sixth place finish and Rachel Daley shaved nearly 30 seconds off her career best 5,000-meter time with a 2:24.04. Daley won her section and placed 10th overall for the River Hawks.
Other top finishers for the women included Jasmine Mitchell who captured third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.14 seconds. Freshman Samantha Reed was fourth in the 200-meter dash with a 27.39 which was less than a half second away from third place and Erin Reese took eighth in the 5K for Susquehanna.
The River Hawks compete down Route 15 at Bucknell next weekend before hosting the SU Challenge (Feb. 3) and SU Invitational (Feb. 18).
