Volleyball Opens Up Crusader Classic with Two Victories

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The volleyball team won both of their matches against King's (Pa.) and Elmira on the opening day of the sixth-annual Crusader Classic on Friday.

SU opened the day in dominant fashion by grabbing a 3-0 win over King's. The Crusaders won by scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-11. In that match, the Crusaders boasted two players with double-digit kill totals. Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) led the way with 11, followed just behind by Emily Carson (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), who had 10.

As a team, Susquehanna racked up nine service aces with Carson, Dana Kreutzer (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and Jessica Cornman-Homonoff (Brooklyn, Conn./Woodstock Academy) all finishing with two. In addition, Julia Caruso (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and Sam Adler (Montville, N.J./Montville Twp.) and 19 and 16 assists, respectively, with Caruso also providing the match-winning kill.

In their second match of the evening, the Crusaders defeated Elmira 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-20).

Dunkel and Carson had 10 kills apiece. Caruso finished with 24 assists. Kate Reese (Wellsboro, Pa. / Wellsboro Area) registered 16 digs and Carson had 12 digs, respectively.

SU wraps-up its two-day tournament tomorrow with matches at 1 and 3 p.m.
