Volleyball Goes 2-1 in Day One of Crusader Classic

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Competing in the first day of the seventh-annual Crusader Classic, Susquehanna's volleyball team went 2- 1 on Saturday in Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium.

SU (10-14) first went up against Division-II opponent Pitt-Johnstown, with senior Kristin Shanabrook (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg Area) facing younger sister Kelsey for the first time in their career.

The Crusaders fell 3-1 (24-26, 20-25, 26-24, 20-25), playing five back-and-forth sets. Senior Emily Carson (Caldwell, N.J. / James Caldwell) finished with a double-double, recording 18 kills with a .327 attack percentage and 14 digs.

Sophomore Julia Caruso (Collegeville, Pa. / Perkiomen Valley) also had a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa. / Tamaqua Area) recorded 20 digs for SU against the Lady Cats.

SU picked up their first victory against PSU-Behrend in four sets (25-21, 25-19, 24-26, 25-15). Carson had another double-double outing; posting 16 kills with 11 digs. Caruso registered 36 assists and Paluck notched 18 digs for the Crusaders.

In the last match of the day, the Crusaders defeated the Gothic Knights from New Jersey City 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-14). Freshman Torrie Garner (James Creek, Pa. / Huntingdon Area) led the team with seven kills with a .316 attack percentage. Classmate Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa. / Trinity) had 10 assists and eight digs while Paluck finished in double-digit digs for the third time on Saturday with 15.

Day Two of the Crusader Classic continues tomorrow, beginning at 10:00 a.m. SU plays Bryn Athyn at 12: 00 p.m. and Immaculata at 2:00 p.m.
