Volleyball Picked Second in Landmark Preseason Poll

TOWSON, Md. – The Susquehanna volleyball team has been predicted to finish tied for second in the 2013 Landmark Conference preseason poll, released Wednesday.

The Crusaders (17-22, 3-3 L.C. in 2012) received 38 points and one first-place tally with Catholic also earning 38 points. Reigning conference champion and No. 20 ranked Juniata hauled in 60 points and six first-place votes.

Moravian earned 30 points for fourth place followed by Scranton with 21 points. Goucher and Merchant Marine closed out the poll with 18 and 12 points, respectively.

SU, under 11th-year head coach Kuuipo Tom, opens the 2013 season on Saturday at the Haverford Invitational. Tom enters the season only three wins shy of 200 career victories.

The Crusaders have six returners and eight newcomers on the roster this year. Juniors Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J. / Pascack Hills) and Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa. / Pottsville Area) combined for 371 kills in 2012.

Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa. / Tamaqua Area) led the team with 556 digs and Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa. / Trinity) and Julia Caruso (Collegeville, Pa. / Perkiomen Valley) combined for 1,006 assists a year ago.

The top six teams in the final regular season standings qualify for postseason play in the Landmark Conference Tournament. The third and fourth seeds will host first round matches Nov. 5 with the winners advancing to semifinal matches Nov. 8 at the No. 1 seed.

The championship match will feature the semifinal winners on Saturday, Nov. 9. The conference champion will earn the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
