SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna volleyball continued its hot start to the 2013 season on Friday night, defeating former MAC-opponents Elizabethtown and Messiah in the Old Friends Crossover Tournament.

SU (10-1) is off to its best start of a season since 2008, when the Crusaders began the year 13-2.

The Crusaders won a tough-fought match against Elizabethtown to open the night, winning 3-1. SU took the first set 25-16 but the next two went to extra-points in which the Blue Jays (6-4) won the second set 26-24 and SU took the third 29-27. The Crusaders closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.

Freshman Maggie O’Hearn (Mountville, Pa. / Hempfield) posted a double-double with a game-high 44 assists and 13 digs. Classmate Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) also recorded a double-double with a match-best 18 kills and 13 digs.

Sophomore Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa. / Tamaqua) registered 27 digs while freshman Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa. / North Penn) added 10 digs of her own.

Junior Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J. / Pascack Hills) finished with 12 kills and classmate Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa. / Pottsville Area) posted an all-around effort with six kills, two digs and six total blocks.

Against Messiah (4-3), the Crusaders took the first two sets 25-15 and 25-20 before falling to the Falcons in the third set, 25-18. SU won the deciding set 25-19.

Once again, O’Hearn had a strong match, registering another double-double with 41 assists and 16 digs. Byrne recorded her second double-double of the evening, tallying 12 kills and 16 digs.

Paluck had 33 digs, four assists and one service ace while Chiodo finished with three assists and 13 digs. Freshman Corrine Eidle (Reading, Pa. / Wyomissing Area) chipped in with 13 digs.

The Crusaders compete in the Franklin & Marshall Scramble Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 15, playing against Cabrini, Mt. St. Vincent and host F & M.
