SU Volleyball Defeats Stevens on Opening Day of Stevens Tournament

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Susquehanna women's volleyball defeated Stevens Institute of Technology on the opening day of the Stevens Institute Tournament. The win came following the team's 3-0 win over Brooklyn in its first match of the night.

SU (16-3) dealt Stevens (14-4) just its fourth loss of the year after defeating the host Ducks 27-25, 26-24, 25-14.

Against Stevens, Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) led the team with 13 kills while Kady Faller (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) added 11. Erin Bryne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) chipped in 12 digs, nine kills, three service aces and three block assists and Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) finished with 39 assists and six digs.

SU took the first set against the Ducks after a kill from Holm made it 26-25 and Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) followed with a set-wining service ace.

In the second set, the Crusaders trailed by as many as 10 (20-10) before going on a 14-1 run that made it 24-21. Stevens tied it at 24 before Susquehanna again ended the set with back-to-back points with Dunkel again providing a set-winning service ace.

Susquehanna led from start to finish in the third and final set, leading by 10 (13-3) roughly midway through the action. A kill from Faller made it 24-13 and a Stevens service error handed the set – and the –match – to SU.

The Crusaders made quick work of Brooklyn, winning 25-8, 25-9, 25-9 to open play at the tournament. Faller led the team with eight kills and was one of six players with at least four kills in the match. Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) had 11 digs while O'Hearn added 30 assists and two service aces.

SU wraps-up play at the tournament with two more matches on Saturday. Susquehanna faces the City College of New York at 11 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. match against New York University, which defeated Stevens in its first match on Friday night.
