HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Susquehanna women’s volleyball team split its pair of matches on the final day of the Stevens Institute Tournament, defeating the City College of New York 3-0 before falling to a now 15-1 New York University squad 3-2.
SU (17-4) opened the day with a 25-8, 25-12, 25-11 win over CCNY in which Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) led the team in kills with eight while Rachel Wherry (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) added six. Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) had four kills and three blocks assists while Maggie O’Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) tallied 31 assists and Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) recorded 12 digs. Paluck also had a match-high six service aces.
The team rounded out play at the tournament by taking NYU to five sets. The Crusaders opened with a 25-22 win before falling 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 12-15 to suffer just their fourth loss of the season.
Against the Violets, Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) racked up 13 kills while Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. She also added four block assists and three service aces. O’Hearn had another 35 assists while also chipping in 10 digs. Paluck tallied 29 digs.
SU closed out its first-set win against NYU thanks to a Violets service error. The Crusaders dropped the next two sets before rallying to tie the match at two-all with a fourth-set win. Susquehanna led 24-21 and were win the match on an attack error from NYU’s Katie Robinson.
Unfortunately that momentum didn’t carry into the fifth set as the Violets took the 15-12 decision.
Susquehanna returns to the court on Oct. 2 with a 7:30 p.m. match at PSU-Berks.
