CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Susquehanna women’s volleyball team is spending its fall break on the West where, on Saturday, the Crusaders dropped 3-0 decisions to Pomona-Pitzer and No. 25 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

SU (20-6) fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-20) to the Sage Hens before falling in three (25-20, 25-23, 25-19) to the Athenas (15-3).

Against Pomona-Pitzer, California native Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) led the team with 13 kills and also added five digs. Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) recorded 14 digs, a team-high, while Maggie O’Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) racked up 30 assists, two service aces and seven digs. Kady Faller (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) added seven kills.

In the opening set, the Crusaders were down just one early (4-3) but found themselves trailing by 10 (20-10) late in the action. SU closed that gap to seven at 22-15 but Pomona-Pitzer (12-6) scored the final three points to win the first set.

The Sage Hens led from start to finish in the second set but did not have such an easy time in the third and ultimately final set. Susquehanna led 4-3 after a kill from Byrne but found itself trailing by four (13-9) later in the set. SU rallied, however, to tie it at 17 on a Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) service ace but Pomona-Pitzer went ahead on the next play and did not relinquish that lead.

Against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) had 12 kills while Byrne added 12 kills of her own to go along with eight digs. Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and O’Hearn both had 11 digs apiece with O’Hearn adding 34 assists for a double-double.
