Volleyball Earns Split In Conference Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the opening day of the second and final Landmark Conference round robin volleyball tournament, the Susquehanna volleyball team split a pair of matches in Washington, D.C.

SU defeated Catholic 3-1 (25-11, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20) before falling in a hard-fought match to No. 10 Juniata 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 24-26). With the split, the Crusaders are now 21-8 overall with a 3-1 mark in conference play.

The matches were originally scheduled to be played at USMMA but with the government shutdown, the weekend tournament was shifted to Catholic University.

Against the Cardinals, Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) had a solid all-around effort with 18 kills, two service aces, four digs, four block assists and one solo block. As a team, SU tallied 13 blocks on the day (three solo, 10 assisted).

Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) joined Dunkel in double-digit kills with 14 while also adding nine digs. Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) racked up 48 assists and Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) had 23 digs and six assists.

Against the 10th-ranked Eagles (22-3, 4-0), Byrne led the team with 14 kills while also picking up six digs. Paluck tallied another 25 digs, bringing her total to 48 on the day, and O'Hearn had 25 assists and six digs.

The Crusaders had a chance to extend the match beyond third set after they led 21-11 but Juniata was able to work its way back into the lead and win the match courtesy of a 26-24 third-set win.

Susquehanna plays its final conference match of the fall tomorrow with a 10:30 a.m. matchup with Moravian.
