Byrne, Salsman Selected as Pepsi/SAAC Super Crusaders

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Volleyball and men’s soccer are represented the Pepsi/SAAC Super Crusaders for the period ending Oct. 27 as freshman Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) and senior Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) have been honored.

Byrne, who was also named the Landmark Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, helped the Crusaders (26-8, 4-1 Landmark) to a 4-0 mark last week, winning every match by 3-0 decisions. Byrne finished the week with 38 kills (3.45 kps), a .452 attack percentage, 18 digs, 13 service aces and three block assists.

The team opened the week with a 3-0 win over visiting Lancaster Bible where Byrne had eight kills and five service aces as the Crusaders improved to 10-0 at home. SU traveled to the PSU-Abington Tournament on Saturday and picked up wins over PSU-Abington, Alvernia and Ursinus.

Against the Lions, Byrne finished with 12 kills and four digs while adding eight kills, three service aces and seven digs against Alvernia. In the weekend’s final match, she picked up 10 more kills, five service aces and seven digs in a win over the Bears.

So far this season, Byrne has appeared in all 34 matches and leads the team with 358 kills (3.25 kps), is hitting for a .235 attack percentage and also has a team-high 70 service aces to go along with 23 digs and 64 blocks.

Salsman, who was selected as the Landmark Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon, started both of SU’s games last week and posted shutouts in each of them, tying him with Austin Kelsey ’07 for the most shutouts in program history with 17.

The Crusaders got the week started with a 1-0 blanking of Landmark Conference opponent Juniata and followed that with a 3-0 win at Goucher in another conference matchup. Salsman had three saves against the Eagles and four against the Gophers.

In 15 starts this season, Salsman boasts a 10-4-1 record with five shutouts, 45 saves, a 0.88 goals-against average (GAA) and a .776 save percentage. The senior is one victory shy of tying current assistant coach B.J. Merriam ’11 for the most wins in SU history (28).

Susquehanna has now won four straight games, including three straight shutouts. The team stands at 11-4-1 on the season with a 5-2-0 mark in conference action. The Crusaders have clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference postseason tournament with final seedings still to be determined this week.

Byrne and the volleyball team returns to action on Nov. 2 at the PSU-Harrisburg Tri-Match. Salsman and the Crusaders host non-conference opponent Misericordia on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., the final regular season match of 2013.
