Volleyball Wins Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Susquehanna volleyball team came home the winner of the Haverford Invitational after splitting a pair of matches on the second and final day of the tournament. The Crusaders (3-1) defeated Widener in straight sets before falling in five to host Haverford.

SU finished with a 3-1 record over the tournament, which included a 3-1 win over No. 22 UMass-Boston on Saturday, and won on point differential over Stevenson.

The day started out with a sweep of Widener, 25-15, 25-14, 25-17. Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) led SU with nine kills and a .643 attack percentage. The sophomore also added six digs and three service aces. Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area), meanwhile, chipped in 12 digs and another three service aces. Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) led the way for Susquehanna with 30 assists while Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) had a match-high five block assists to go along with six kills.

Against the Fords, SU lost in five (25-23, 18-25, 25-13, 15-25, 15-13). Byrne picked up a double-double, though, in the form of 12 kills and 14 digs while also adding six assists and three service aces. Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa./Marian Catholic) led all Crusaders with 15 kills while O'Hearn tallied 41 assists and six digs. Paluck, meanwhile, capped off her weekend with 17 digs to lead her squad.

Susquehanna opens its home season on Sept. 5-6 when the Crusaders host their annual Hampton Inn Crusader Classic.
