Two More Wins for Volleyball

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's volleyball team ran its win streak to seven with two wins on the opening day of the Lycoming Invitational. SU defeated Pitt-Bradford and Houghton, both by 3-0 scores.

The Crusaders (10-1) picked up their first win of the weekend with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-21 win over Pitt-Bradford. Marykate Shernkess led the team with nine kills and Sarah Paluck had a match-best 16 digs. Maggie O'Hearn picked up 27 assists in her three sets of action.

The first set was tied 8-8 early in the action before a Jessica Holm kill made it 9-8 and handed SU a lead it ultimately would not relinquish. Susquehanna ended the match with kills from Erin Byrne and Holm for the 25-14 win.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set and never trailed in the set. They led by 10 (23-13) and closed out the set victory with back-to-back kills by Morgan Whiteman and Nickey Sanders.

The third set was the closest of the three with the teams tied at 16 more than midway through the action. SU built a 21-17 lead but Pitt-Bradford pulled within two (21-19) before SU went on to score four of the final six points.

Several hours later, the Crusaders defeated Houghton 25-16, 25-16, 25-19. Byrne led the team with a double-double in the form of 10 kills and 13 digs. Holm and Whiteman had seven kills each and O'Hearn added 40 more assists.

The team concludes play at the Invitational on Saturday with an 11:30 match against York and a 1:30 match against Elmira.
