Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Susquehanna volleyball team recorded its second loss of the season, falling 3-1 to non-conference opponent Johns Hopkins on Wednesday night. The defeat, which came by a score of 24-26, 25-19, 13-25, 23-25, ended the Crusaders' (12-2) nine-match winning streak.

SU lost in a back-and-forth match with two sets decided by only two points, both in favor of Johns Hopkins (4-8).

Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) accounted for nine of the team's 20 block assists with fellow senior Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) adding five in addition to eight kills.

Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) led SU with nine kills of her own, and posted a strong .429 hitting percentage with no errors in 21 attempts.

Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) and Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) both reached double figures in digs, tallying 22 and 11, respectively, with Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) close behind, recording nine digs and 12 assists. Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) finished with five kills, five assists, and three digs.

For Johns Hopkins, freshman Kristi Rhead was just shy of a triple-double with eight kills, 13 digs, and 22 assists. Mereze Visagie led the Blue Jays with 10 kills and no errors in 19 attempts.

Susquehanna will next compete at the Elmhurst Invitational from Sept. 19-20 with matches against Chicago, Heidelberg, Millikin, and Wheaton (Ill.). Like Susquehanna, Millkin and Chicago received votes in the latest national poll from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
